Manners can go a long way and both ways

I’ve been feeling under appreciated lately, and feeling like I’m the only one that cares about the household and actually puts some elbow grease to make it look half decent.

The most recent incident being this evening, while I was working, my MIL did the dishes. I woke up late today and hadn’t had time, other wise, I always do them, especially since Peter doesn’t do any dishes and MIL winds up doing a bad enough job most of the time that I have to rewash stuff.

She’d made dinner too tonight, and when I finished work at 10pm and had some dinner, she later came down to check how we liked dinner, etc and asked how I must have liked the kitchen being cleared up from clutter when I finished work, I nodded, agreed and said thank you.

Why is it that when people do things that they don’t ordinarily do, they expect to be thanked, but when the person who takes on those responsibilities day in and day out, it’s a thankless job?

It’s a pretty rare occasion that I get thanked for something, and when I do, it’s usually followed after I’ve said “Your welcome!” in hopes that it’ll ring some bells in their unappreciative minds.

Maybe it’s just my way of thinking, from the way I was brought up, to learn to be appreciative, polite and kind, and maybe they just don’t think that way… they just aren’t used to voicing courtesy, politeness and gratefulness like I do.

My MIL is FOREVER seeming to reach for confirmation/validation of the things she does – and to top it off, she actually doesn’t do much at all. But being who I am, I usually give it to her, but again, it can surely go both ways.

*shrugs* I just don’t think it’s really not all that hard to do, and a thank you, please or good job goes a long way once in a while.

Everyone likes it when they are validated for doing some thing good, or kind or after working really hard on something, and it’s not fair that it should only go one way.

That’s my rant for the day.
